Confessional (Cebuano film at its Best)

An independent film…
A film with around 1 million peso budget, Confessional does not skimp on production value. It rises above its level. It disproves the general impression that many independent films look like no-budget independent films. Indie film doesn’t have to look cheap. Quality film needs not to be costly just like Confessionals.

A Bold Statement…
Lie + Lie = Truth is the movie’s tag line. Lies are strewn over the scenes from Ryan Pastor twisting the truths in editing wedding videos to create commercially appealing shots to crooked politicians appalling election machinations. The movie impresses to the audiences that truth is now the scarcest commodity, a material that is found on the rarest and most uncertain places, that, truth is not equal to goodness. A bad, murderous and hedonistic ex-mayor Mr.Lito Caliso can be disturbingly honest too.

A material just in time…
The general plot of the mockumentary film is very timely as the nation is in search for truth over the never ending NBN deal commotion. I could not help but contemplate on Mr. Jun Lozada’s case in the person of Lito. The movie is a mellow satire of the present political dispute in the quest for that illusive truth.

The fact that it is done by Cebuanos and shot in Cebu is already enough to entice me to watch it. It is a package of Cebuano materials with no trace of inferiority. The incidental use of the Sinulog to introduce the plot was interestingly brilliant. It enlivens the story especially with its tragic windup. The material is presented with the exuberant use of metaphors. The lines were realistic although philosophical and preachy at times which was not necessary but a superfluity. After all this is just a show – a grand parade of hyperbole.

A Technical Triumph…

Perhaps if there is one thing that is very remarkable in this movie is the fact that it is an independent film but with a superb technical accomplishment. The shots were amazing despite the limitations with the camera used in filming. With the technology driven creativity of the makers of this film you will be surprised to know that they are newbies to the film industry. From the running credits to the film editing itself it is a masterful application of the art. The musical scoring is exceptional, especially with the admirable used of local Cebuano music. The audiences were taken to a new dimension of pure Cebuano entertainment.

What is next?
When the makers where asked what we are to expect soon, they answered: “What's next is a big-budget super hero film starring Makisig with Victor Villanueva as sidekick. still working out the title...”
